CHILD LEAD SCREENING
Childhood lead poisoning is now recognized as the number one preventable disease of children. Lead poisoning affects a child’s development and health. A low to moderate level of lead poisoning, even in the absence of overt clinical symptoms, results in a loss of intelligence, behavior and neuro-motor problems, and poor performance.
Lead is found in many everyday items. Just because you live in a new house, your child is still at risk. Soil, dust, drinking water, air, food, some occupations and hobbies involve lead use. Lead – based paint, from older homes continues to be a problem.
Every child who is 12 months old should be tested and then again at 24 months. Children that are considered to be high risk should be tested earlier. (6 months) Children 3-5 years old who have not yet been tested should do so.
Available by appointment during scheduled Child Health Clinics done by finger stick.
