Kinnelon Recreation Discovery Camp 2020

A message to our Kinnelon Recreation Summer Discovery Camp Families: For the past 5 years our staff anxiously prepares for your arrival in July for an amazing experience of fun and friendship. Almost from the moment our campers walk out the door on the last day, plans for the following year begin. It’s the dedication of our staff that makes this camp a well-loved program in Kinnelon.

The safety of our campers and counselors doesn’t happen by accident. Important protocols are developed then constantly improved, sometimes by day, sometimes each hour. It is with this in mind, that we must sadly report that the traditional Kinnelon Recreation Summer Discovery Camp will not be held during 2020. Please know that this decision did not come easily. Summer Camp is a vital part and fond memory of almost every child’s life.

Many factors were considered during the weeks leading up to this decision (and many sleepless nights!) But the safety of our children, both campers and counselors, the families they go home to, the many grandparents that drop off and pick up each day must take precedence over all.

During many virtual meetings with the CDC (Center for Disease Control), the ACA (American Camps Association) and YMCA-there is not a camp in this country and beyond that is not agonizing over this decision. Weighing the desperate need for our children to feel normalcy versus what is the best, right thing to do...leads many if not most camps to that one question...can we keep our community safe even with an extensive list of strict rules, social distancing, group size, the use of PPE and exclusion of a majority of the activities historically provided?

In addition to these organizations, much discussion has taken place with state and county officials, fellow recreation directors, our local health department director, the Kinnelon Recreation Committee and the leaders of our community, the Mayor and Council. Finally, we believe that the Stonybrook School should be given all the time they need to properly sanitize and prepare the building for school this fall without the added distraction of children moving throughout the building for the month of July.

We are in the planning stages to provide the families of Kinnelon with some fun experiences this summer. That information will be sent out in early June. “Camp to Go” boxes and an increase to outdoor family programs are among the ideas.. NJ Governor Murphy has stated that he will provide additional guidelines regarding what types of summer activities will be allowed by the end of May.

Until our plans are unveiled, please keep healthy and happy. KREC misses all of you and we look forward to a future of fun and friendship once again. Thank you, Melanie Schuckers - Recreation Director
